How to Find Active Adult Communities in Arizona
What is an Active Adult Community?
There’s really not much difference between active adult communities in Arizona and any other planned community with the exception of a minimum age requirement.
In Arizona, many active adult communities require their residents to be at least 55. Sometimes even 62 and upwards. Additionally, at least 80% of the homes must be occupied by those who fall into the age bracket I mentioned previously.
Throughout the Phoenix Valley the majority of active adult communities are composed of one level homes, condos and rental apartments.
Most active adult communities attract a mix of retired and employed residents aged between 60 and 65. Over 95 percent of the residents cook their own meals, participate in community activities and consider themselves to be highly independent.
Master-planned Adult Communities were previously built within suburban areas such as Sun City, Sun City West, and Sun Lakes. Today, it’s more common to see senior living communities placed closer to traditional neighborhoods without age restrictions.
Seniors who live within an Arizona master-planned community, such as Del Webb’s Sun City Festival or Anthem, have reduced property tax bills. Since children are often not permitted to live in these communities, schools are often not funded by taxpayer money.
Resort-style amenities, low cost of living, and proximity to a championship golf course are some of the most popular reasons a buyer would decide to live in an active adult community. Living in an active adult gated community can provide you with additional security when taking short walks to the mailbox or grocery store.
When searching for an active adult community in Arizona, here are some things you should consider.
Ease of Access
Even if you have a stair-climbing device, it can become a hassle to get up and down the stairs of a house you once enjoyed. Cleaning, laundry and simply getting around your own home become stressful. Look for ease of access at an active adult community. This could mean a single-level dwelling or elevators that can accommodate wheelchairs, depending on your health.
Housekeeping and Landscaping
For decades, you tackled the housekeeping, landscaping, meal preparation and other mundane duties at home. Even if the kids helped out, it required multiple reminders. Now that you are ready to retire, look for a community that provides all of these services so you are relieved of these duties.
Maintaining a vehicle is more work and sometimes it gets difficult to drive if you have lost vision or hearing. Make sure to live in a community with public transportation. Some communities provide their own transportation to residents. It is also great to be in a location where you can walk to local shops and restaurants.
Country Club Style Amenities
If you had a swimming pool at your house, this is a feature you may want to find in a retirement community. Best of all, they will take care of cleaning the swimming pool so all you need to do is enjoy it. Other amenities to consider include a community center, tennis courts and walking trails. Basically today’s 55 and over communities must promise an enjoyable living experience to those who support an active lifestyle.
Senior living communities often provide a chance to socialize right on the premises. This might include fitness centers, craft sessions, holiday dinners and other fun activities so you can appreciate the company of people your own age.
